What is Reiki Healing?
Reiki is a Japanese healing art that involves channeling the life force or universal energy — white or golden light — for the higher good of oneself or others. The word Reiki means spiritually guided life force energy. In Japanese, Rei means “God’s wisdom or the higher power” and Ki means “life force energy”.
Many other practices and healing modalities are based on the concept of the presence of energy. In yoga, this energy is called prana. Acupuncture, Feng Shui, Tai Chi and martial arts are also based on the concept of energy flow. In Christianity, this energy is the light or love of God. Spiritualists, clairvoyants and mediums work with this energy. They use this energy for protection. They merge with this energy, channel it and read it.
A Reiki healer channels this universal energy from above, through their body and hands, and administers this energy by hovering their hands over the individual undergoing healing, or placing their hands on areas of the body. In distant healing, the practitioner channels and sends this energy via meditation, visualisation and intent.
What does Reiki Treatment Feel Like?
A Reiki treatment usually feels warm as though you are being filled with warm golden light. You may feel tingling, see colours and lights, and experience a variety of other sensations. You may simply feel relaxed and experience deeper sleep to allow your body to heal. You could feel emotional as deep-seated emotions well up to the surface and you release and heal from past pain. You may also hear or receive personal revelations, spiritual enlightenment or messages.
Whether you experience hands-on Reiki healing or distant healing, Reiki aids relaxation, healing, and self- and spiritual- development. When someone sends you distant Reiki healing, you will be able to feel it even though you may be 100s of miles apart.
Does Reiki Really Work?
I have experienced Reiki healing myself. It has worked for me; it helped me heal on multiple levels:
• Emotional: It enabled me to let go of blocks and relationships. It helped me heal from past deep-seated hurt and trauma. In the 28 days after I started Reiki, my entire life changed dramatically. I started to let go of relationships that no longer served me.
• Physical: I had been extremely ill in hospital. After being discharged, I underwent multiple Reiki treatment sessions. When I went to my follow up scan, the sonographer said the change in my body was miraculous. She said: “I cannot believe that this scan is of the same body that appears on the scan performed two weeks ago.” The speed of my healing was extremely fast and could not be explained by conventional medicine.
• Mental: My life force was depleted. I was mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. My life force was at a low level. Reiki filled me up with light and lifted me and my life to higher levels. I felt stronger and more positive and enthusiastic.
• Spiritual: The ongoing practice of Reiki meditation and healing, as well as the practice of distant healing helped me become even more sensitive to energy and departed spirits, as well as the higher realms of angels and the divine. I feel connected to my guides, departed spirits, the angels, as well as God and the spirit of Jesus Christ.
Is Reiki a Religion?
Reiki is compatible with all religions and spiritual beliefs. Anyone can benefit from Reiki whether they believe in universal life force energy or not. Reiki healing can occur regardless of whether you are an atheist or believe in God or you are somewhere in between. Although Reiki is not a religion, it can help you become more in tune with your spiritual beliefs.
Reiki is not an isolated practice, however. The founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, advocated living and acting in ways that promote peace and harmony. Here are the five spiritual precepts he handed down as part of the Usui System of Reiki:
Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Honour your parents, teachers and elders.
Earn your living honestly.
Show gratitude to every living thing.
May the life force work for your higher good on your life’s path. Sending peace, love and light out to you.
